THE TRIAL (2025)
lighting design
based on Franz Kafka’s novel: a contemporary stage adaptation of The Trial by Greek director Aris Biniaris, that plunges the audience into Kafka’s unsettling universe, where the individual confronts an opaque and oppressive system. Following the journey of Josef K., the production unfolds as a relentless and surreal process in which guilt, power and justice remain ambiguous and elusive. Biniaris’ staging is highly physical and rhythmic, blending music, lighting effects, movement, spoken and sung word.
Through the absence of distinct shadows, various rhythmic lighting effects, elaborate strobe patterns and detailed colouring, the lighting design attempts a detailed conversation with the ever-present music throughout the piece as well as an attempt to reflect and highlight the anxiety and absurdity of Kafka’s main character, as portrayed in Biniaris’ ground-breaking adaptation.
