Image Two (2017)
visualised and directed by Stephanos Droussiotis
Image Two is an original work by Stephanos Droussiotis for one male and one female performer (Man, Woman). Following Image One, Image Two is the second part of Droussiotis’ trilogy on human kindness, based on a sound installation by Giorgos Poulios.
In the white hospital room, three fully functioning tape machines dominate the space. Magnetic tapes from the tape machines spiral across the room in giant loops while the machines record every sound in real time. Each live sound is instantly imprinted onto a specific point on the tape and begins its journey around the room. As the tape completes its circuit and passes through the machine again, the recorded sounds resurface, layering past and present, multiplying memory and speech.
In a series of visits by the Woman, the Man remains in a comatose state, silent and motionless, while her voice fills the space, reverberating and accumulating with each pass. Through her recorded voice, she remains present, even between the still scenic moments between her visits. Over time, hundreds of fragments of speech and sound intertwine, creating a dense, living soundscape. The audience is immersed in the subonscious labyrinth of the Man’s mind: the echoes, repetitions, and resonances of a consciousness trapped between memory and the present, with her voice as the only bridge between the two realities. The present splits into two. Their attempt at communication is put to the test, leading to a necessary transformation in the terms of their coexistence.
Image Two was the second part of a trilogy on human kindness, distinguished by a specific creative experiment: each piece was developed, rehearsed, visualised and brought to the stage within just fourteen days from conception. This bold but deliberate compression of time was an attempt to work with complete freedom; to create instinctively, allowing the subconscious to lead the creative process without censorship; a study on the spontaneous creation of the unfiltered mind.
