Dubitanda (2017)
Artistic Director + Creative Producer
Dubitanda is a small-scale theatre festival conceived, curated and directed by Stephanos Droussiotis for the Cyprus Theatre Organisation.
Dubitanda, curated by Stefanos Drousiotis, was a theatre festival held during the final quarter of 2017 at the Apothikes Theatre of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC). The festival aimed to offer both emerging creators and the wider Cypriot public new stimuli from contemporary international theatre, focusing primarily on the performative practices of post-dramatic theatre.
The Dubitanda Festival inaugurated the “Apothikes Theatre Program” of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation. Since 2017, THOC has invited a Cypriot artist to assume the artistic direction of the Apothikes Theatre for a three-month period, designing a series of theatrical events for the local audience. During the first quarter of the 2017–2018 season (October–December), the program was curated by Stefanos Drousiotis.
Within this framework, a three-month program was developed featuring screenings of some of the most emblematic performances of post-dramatic theatre from the 20th and 21st centuries, some subtitled in Greek for the first time. The festival also hosted on-stage discussions with Nikos Karathanos, Michail Marmarinos, and Dimitris Papaioannou, exploring their creative processes; a seminar with the research team of the legendary Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio on the personality and work of Romeo Castellucci; and a conversation with Robert Sturm on Pina Bausch’s creative process, featuring rare archival material. The program also included performances such as Relic by Euripides Laskaridis and Hero by Sofia Mavragani.
Additionally, the festival created space for artistic research by emerging Cypriot theatre-makers. Dubitanda inaugurated the New Creators Theatre Platforms, giving young Cypriot artists access to THOC’s full range of resources, materials, and services, as well as support from the Dubitanda artistic team in producing and presenting their work.
In parallel, the Dubitanda artistic team created and presented a triptych of stage works developed through the creative process during the festival’s run.
All of Dubitanda’s activities focused on contemporary theatrical creation from the late 1960s to the present day. Through its screenings, talks, residencies, and seminars, the festival sought to bring Cypriot audiences closer to the artists and works that have shaped both the international and Greek theatre landscape in recent decades.
